London pubs: many great ones but best one a personal choice
From The Reading Eagle/Times: April 2007
Probably no two people would agree about which is the characteristic feature of England. Maybe the Queen, red double-decker buses, Tower Bridge, Big Ben, palaces, castles, little villages, the countryside? I'm not sure either but what I miss most while away travelling is the English pub.

There is a unique ambience about them, they're social institutions where locals like to meet up and people are often friendlier to strangers. The range of pubs is infinite from scruffy dire drinking dens to glittering overpriced celebrity haunts and London has those and everything in between.

London is so old that just about everywhere has been rebuilt at some point and in some way so nobody can say which is genuinely the oldest pub. Better to think about the "best pub" and that of course is personal so it's down to you........
